Breadth for BCom students

So you want to get around the breadth requirement, but all the breadth subjects look pretty bad/uninteresting.

First of all, the BCom has a quantitative requirement and a breadth requirement. Instead of doing the usual QM1 + QM2/Intro Econometrics route, you can meet the quantitative requirement and partly the breadth requirement by doing taking these subjects:

620-157 Mathematics 1
620-158 Mathematics 2
620-201 Probability
620-201 Statistics

These four subjects all count as breadth AND they meet the BCom's quantitative requirement. The only draw back is that you needed to have done spesh. If you didn't then you need to do some special exam i believe.

Furthermore all the Business Law subjects count as breadth. Most of the business law subjects (except for 732-302 Banking And Finance Law) are in fact required for CPA/CA (accounting) accreditation.

Additionally all math subjects (like the ones above that satisfy the BCom quantitative requiremen) from the science faculty count as breadth too, and a few of them have quite useful Commerce applications: http://www.unimelb.edu.au/HB/areas/SMATH.html#S100359

So if you are doing BCom and you want to do breadth subjects related to your course then you should consider:

620-157 Mathematics 1
620-158 Mathematics 2
620-201 Probability
620-201 Statistics
620-301 Stochastic Modelling
620-302 Chance and Options Pricing
732-103 Principles of Business Law
732-202 Corporate Law
732-303 Taxation Law

And if you are in High School and considering doing a BCom - do SPESH!

You need 40 raw in spesh to do mathematics 1 and mathematics 2, otherwise you'll have to sit the APT (advanced placement test) during O-week. :)

Why? For the reasons mentioned in Ahmads post?

Yeah seriously, 40 raw is a tall order in specialist. :P What kind of advice is that? "OKAY! IF YOU DO SPECIALIST AND GET 40 RAW THERE'S THIS TINY LOOPHOLE THAT..."

Are maths 1 and 2 a requirement for any majors besides Actuarial (Presumed)?

You can also achieve a mark of 70 or higher in the easier maths stream (not sure what it's called in the new maths scheme) in order to get into Probability, so that you don't need a 38 raw in Specialist Mathematics (40 raw is only the recommended minimum). The easier maths stream only required Methods.

They are prerequisites for Probability and Statistics. Statistics is a prerequisite for Econometrics. Econometrics is prerequisite for Economics and Finance honours

Ah I see. So if you intend to do a Economics and ("or" or "and"?) Finance honours then you need to do maths 1 and 2.

Not really. You can satisfy the prereqs for Econometrics by doing QM1 and 316-205 Introductory Econometrics. But they don't count as breadth, so i suggested if you do my way, you have less breadth subjects to do. And my way keeps your the Actuarial option open too. Don't want to close too many doors in first year.

The reason why brendan has proposed a plan with Mathematics 1 & 2 and Probability and Statistics is that it fulfils the 'quantitative requirements' of Commerce (everyone has to do these). It does this while also fulfilling the breadth requirements (not sure about this, but brendan believes so).

If you do satisfy the quantitative requirement my way, you end up with 2 more commerce subjects to choose from, than if you just satisfied the breadth and quantitative requirement the normal way. If you prefer doing commerce subjects over non-commerce subjects, and you have done spesh and got over 40, then do it my way.
