HOW HARD IS SPESH

Hi
I am a Year 9 student in a very good school. I am hoping to do Methods and Music Perf 1/2 in Year 10 and 3/4 Music Perf and 3/4 Methods in Year 11 as I am in the top 10% of my school's Math's and academic cohort. Do you think I could manage 3/4 Spesh Maths in Year 12? My other subjects are likely to be English, Physics and Indonesian/Bus Man. I am hoping to do Engineering in Uni. Please help me to choose my subjects. Thank you.

In all honesty though, spesh is tough in terms of content when compared to Methods, but it's real toughness depends on what you make it out to be.

It's irrelevant that you go to a good school. It's somewhat irrelevant that you're in the top 10% of your cohort in Year 9. Keep up the good work though.

Specialist Maths is manageable like any other VCE subject.

Year 12 2015: You might (emphasis on the might) be lucky enough to be in the first year of Year 12 Australian Curriculum study designs (if things turn out well AC-wise anyway).

Don't worry about year 12 too much for now and go busy yourself with interesting things.

Have a look at those maths competitions and all that other stuff, might be a good challenge for you.

Work outside of your year 9 content by all means, but go read stuff that interests you, don't restrain yourself to the, pretty restrictive, year 12 study designs already. There's a lot of interesting stuff that's not covered. You wouldn't be doing yourself any favours.

It's good that you have an idea of what you might want to do, but I wouldn't settle and narrow yourself down too early. Be open to change.

Oh I should have made clear that I didn't imply not to study, if you want to learn, go learn stuff. The point I want to make is if you want to work ahead just explore maths/whatever other subject in general, rather than setting out to learn the year 12 material explicitly (since it's quite limited in scope and doesn't really give you the opportunity to explore a lot of interesting things).

But yeah, spend some time doing non-study stuff too.

(and yeah I also reconsidered saying 'too keen', could be misinterpreted, I mean it in terms of too keen for year 12 )

Nevertheless, if you are hoping to do Engineering then pick subjects which are pre-requisites for that course and as laseredd said, study outside the Year 9 content. Honestly that linear and quadratic stuff is pretty basic and what I've done is just to look at Methods Unit 1 & 2 and self-learn.
But enjoy life for now and don't worry about it too much.. Have a good idea and some goals on what you want to do first
