MBBS around Australia

Hey everyone :)

I'm doing Year 12 at Haileybury College next year and I want to study undergraduate Medicine in 2013. Monash is my first preference but I would really appreciate it if someone could put all of the other universities around Australia that offer the MBBS undergraduate programme into a list with the most prestigious/difficult to get into ontop of the list. Money is not an issue, my parents and I are willing to pay the money I just really want to get into the course. I don't think I'll get an ATAR of 99+ but i think I've got a good chance to get 96-98. I'm also hoping to do very well in the UMAT and interview and that's obviously imperative.

Thanks very much in advance!

I don't know anything about the MBBS courses, but if you're compiling a list by most prestigious, it is most certainly not for you. To my knowledge, all the MBBS places are CSP.
Edit: I'm pretty sure Biology is a prereq for surgery

Prestige isn't particularly important when it comes to Medicine. Internships are based most significantly on other factors (for example, most of the hospitals in Melbourne depend largely on prior work experience, volunteer work, research experience and such). After that, any post-graduate study for specialisation and such would almost certainly ignore where you studied as an under-grad. And yes, all undergraduate places are CSP. However, Bond University is the (only?) private Medical uni where you can effectively pay your way in if things don't go right elsewhere.

Also, ATAR generally isn't too big of a factor in getting into Medicine so don't worry. I've got several friends sitting on 95s or so, with some even sub-90 (ERC place however). Like you said, UMAT and interview is more important. Regarding the unis, I thought there was a sticky somewhere with a list?

The new implementation of ATAR/UMAT stream places a heavier emphasis on ATAR...

your 'high' (99.5+) ATAR can save your 'low' (<95) UMAT.

NB - just guessing you need 99.5+ if you missed the cut off UMAT by 1 or 2.

I'm 95% sure that I read a post saying if you haven't done it, you'll have to take a Biology uni course in order to do MBBS. But then again, I really have no idea.

Yep....so if you haven't done it you take a bridging course. That doesn't make Biology a VCE 3/4 Pre-req.

Not to mention that most people can't be stuffed doing the bridging course during their Summer and do fine regardless. They go through all the content in lectures anyway. It can be a bit overwhelming for some initially to catch up, but hell, we only get MCQ exams anyway. It can't possibly be THAT bad...

Yeah, I don't think they had that ATAR/UMAT stream last year.  *sigh*

Not that my UMAT was good enough to get in anyway...

Edit:  There is some info on the ATAR/UMAT stream in this doc if anyone wants to know more.  I honestly don't know why it took Monash such a long bloody time to adopt a decent policy that doesn't eliminate you immediately just because of UMAT...

I don't want to be misunderstood. I'm not concerned with prestige myself but I figured that the 'prestigious' courses would be the most difficult to get into and the competition would be very fierce.  Perhaps prestige wasn't the right word to use. I just want a list of MBBS courses ranging from 'most difficult' to 'easiest' to get into for my University preferences. :)

Prestige isn't the same as other fields, but there's always the ability to network with fellow graduates from your alma mater. It's not a formal criteria, but that sort of thing never is.

Off the top of my head, the hardest to get into are UNSW, Monash, UTas and USyd. Someone else should cover this better though

I'm kinda glad this wasn't around when I tried for MBBS--I'm pretty sure I would have gotten an interview with the new criteria, and if I had gotten in, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to pursue an interest in an undergrad degree. Of course, if I didn't make it into MD then I would surely be singing a different tune.

^Yeah, pretty much my thoughts exactly...things are looking okay for me in terms of getting into the MD and I have to say I am loving every minute at Melbourne, which I otherwise never would have gotten to experience.  The sting of missing out on schemes such as the ATAR/UMAT stream and UniMelb guaranteed entry are slowly starting to fade, but if I don't get in then I'll still be mighty pissed.

In terms of getting into the MD program at Melbourne Uni after doing a Bachelor of Biomed at Melbourne, what are your chances?
