UniMelb vs RMIT

Alright,

So I'm looking at doing Mechanical engineering and am now faced with the dilemma between choosing which uni to go to. Monash is not an option as it is too far.

RMIT offers a good course, I can do a double degree with management and they offer more hands on experience.

With Melb Uni i have to go through a BSc degree then complete a masters.

RMIT is well known in Australia and offers work experience overseas.

Melb Uni is known internationally where as RMIT isn't.

If anyone would be able to offer me some insight as to why I should choose one UNI over the other please enlighten me.

Thanks.

I'm currently only in year 11, but from what I've researched, heard people say etc. I wouldn't care much for "known" and prestige of an institution.

This is kind of irrelevant - but I guess it's kind of like private vs public schooling. A hardworking student is going to be just as well off at a public school than they would be at private school. Of course it differs a bit with university - as different unis offer different subjects.

I would look into the actual subjects offered, the quality of the lecturers and the opportunities you'll be given. Work experience would obviously be a major part of your choice - it'd only help to make you look better to employers.

edit:  should mention I'm only in year 11 and probably don't know what I'm talking about.

I'm looking at aerospace engineering and my fallbacks are mechanical or chemical. I would say RMIT as Melbourne's system sucks and well their facilities for engineering are not that great (remember this is just my opinion). RMIT is more hands on if you like that.

Are you sure Monash is too far? Thats where I'm aiming for and well its going to take me 2hrs to get there (thats 4 hours a day or 20 hours a week, nearly a whole bloody day lost on the train each week!). But I am determined enough to handle it ( I hope, I'm still talking myself into it).

2 hours is how long a trip to Monash would take me. That is to excessive in my opinion, you'll lose all motivation for study spending half your days travelling to and from university.

Not if you REALLY enjoy what you are doing, and you can always read or partially study on the train. But then It comes down to what kind of person you are and if you can handle it. For me travelling is not an option as for aerospace it is either Monash or RMIT, where at RMIT first two years are at city then second two years are travelling between the city and RMIT Bundoora. So I don't have a choice, I have to travel.

Yep. Train into city, train out of city to clayton (or huntingdale) station, then bus to monash.

Oh wow. I'm pretty much a 5-10 minute drive further east from Glen Waverly so it's around 30 minutes to Monash or 40 minutes to the city.

You're so luckly, we need a Monash for the Western Suburbs, but then it wouldn't be as good a University, plus the windtunnel is still at Clayton.

Sorry for getting off topic.

If you come from west side like me, you will always pass North Melbourne. The journey from North Melbourne to Flinders Street to Huntingdale to Monash (via bus) takes around 50 minutes but may be more due to the journey requiring 4 changes and public transport especially buses are unreliable.

On the other hand, a bus from North Melbourne to UniMelb takes 15 minutes :D

Monash>RMIT>Melbourne - My opinion and others
Monash=RMIT>Melbourne - The opinion of the rest (that is besides those who go to melbourne)

EDIT: This is just the engineering aspect. Melbourne are great in other areas.

This is one tough decision. I was leaning towards RMIT but that article just blew everything out of proportion.
