Mathematics Coach: Tuition and Enrichment
« on: June 27, 2008, 06:42:55 PM »
Hi guys,

My name is Muhammad Adib Surani and I'm interested in starting an advanced mathematics enrichment class. The target audience is for those who have a strong passion in mathematics, and want to perform well in maths competitions such as Westpac's Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), BHP Billiton School Mathematics Competition, Australian International Mathematical Olympiad (AIMO), to name a few. The audience I am seeking need not necessarily have a strong background in mathematics; it is the interest that counts.

These competitions are nothing like school maths exams, and require a more lateral set of problem solving skills. Myself, I have been participating in maths competitions at a national level since 1998, and at an international level since 2000. Closer to home (Australia), I have participated in the AMC, the BHP, the Vic Uni PSC, among others. Having ten years of experience with mathematical problem solving competitions, I highly wish to impart some of the knowledge and skills required to those who are interested.

I have formally taught competition maths at a primary school for 6 months. If anything, I find that a lack of self-confidence is usually the students' main obstacle when trying to learn new stuff. (This also carries over to syllabus-type mathematics as well.) To that end I am a strong believer in not using calculators except when absolutely necessary. Link: Don't count on calculators, The Age, 2005

Relevant Qualifications:
VCE 2005 ENTER: 99.65
VCE Maths Methods: 50 (-> 50.0, 2004)
VCE Specialist Maths: 49 (-> 54.8, 2005)
UMEP Mathematics: 97 (-> 5.5, 2005, first in course)
Three perfect scores in the Westpac AMC (2002, 2004, 2005)
Third place in BHP Billiton Maths Competition (2005)

As for the actual class itself which I'm intending to conduct, I will be charging about $30 per session, where one session will last 2 hours. This is subject to change depending on how many students are really interested in such a class. If there are enough students then the class can be conducted per group (cheaper), otherwise I'm also open to the idea of one-to-one training as well. The venue isn't definite either, and will most likely be conducted at the state library, also subject to the same circumstances as above.

\mbox{I can be contacted via PM, email: }\mbox{mid}\mbox{qet}\mbox{@ho}\mbox{tma}\mbox{il.}\mbox{com}\mbox{, or SMS: 0433733773.}

Additionally, I will also be offering one-to-one tuition in Specialist Maths. Like the maths competition one, there will be a strong emphasis on being able to solve problems without the need for a calculator.
I will be charging $35/1hr or $50/1.5hrs. Also, the first lesson will be free.
Tutoring will preferably be held at the state library. Contact details are as above.

Cheers and good luck with VCE,
Muhammad Adib Surani

Yep, Adib is a maths guru, you'd be mad to pass up this opportunity.

 hey, you weren't on the intermediate list for 2005. Did you become Ahmath at a later date? :)

 How irrelevant is school maths? Are there comps for people who've left school to test their skills? I might be interested

Most competitions at the high school level don't require any knowledge beyond year 8, meaning there's nothing on calculus or stuff. And no, unfortunately there are no comps after high school. At least not that I know of in Melbourne. But if you're interested it's still overall a very enriching experience to learn competition-style maths.

"This year he was selected to take part in Melbourne University's extension program and hopes to combine his interest in maths and computers in a career such as computer programming.

He says even working with computers does not mean you can rely on technology to provide all the mathematical answers."

Good to see the change of heart. Why do maths in computer programming when you can do pure maths :D

Question to Neobeo.

What's the meaning of the mathematical symbols behind you?

the top bit just looks like some complicated integral.

The bottom bit is talking about Euler's totient function, something in elementary number theory that you wouldn't usually see in high school...

PhD at ANU in pure mathematics.

After a simple substitution the integral is an elliptic integral. The rest is what humph said, number theory stuff (Neobeo's specialty!).  I remember this article was on our school bulletin board back in the day  :D
