Latest News and Updates
Due to my heavy yet somewhat erratic university commitments this year, my availability will be quite staggered. Hence, contact me to be put on the waiting list for these sessions which will allow me to notify you when a day frees up. Please let me know the following:
  • Days and times generally available. Note that weekends will generally be preferred, with few weekdays likely to be available.
  • Intended location. Note that there will be more frequent openings for sessions conducted at my residence in Doncaster East, with progressively less as the distance increases. In decreasing order of preference, recommended locations include:
            1. My residence in Doncaster East
            2. Your residence (surcharges apply for travel beyond ~30 minutes)
            3. Box Hill Library
            4. Glen Waverley Library
            5. State Library (not an ideal tutoring environment, but quite central)
  • Contact number. It is in your best interests to provide me a contact number where I can get in contact with you quickly, as there may be last minute openings and cancellations.

Summary
My name's Andrew and I graduated in 2008 from Melbourne High School with an ENTER score (as it was known back then) of 99.70. I am now in my fourth year of studying Medicine/Surgery at Monash University and have been providing tuition part time ever since I graduated, giving me over 3 years of tutoring experience.

The sessions I am conducting are basically one-on-one, once-off sessions running for 3 hours. These sessions will cover the entire mainstream English course right through from how to prepare during the summer, over the course of the year, just before the exam to examination strategy for the day of the exam itself.

They will take a very focused approach with roughly an hour spent on each section of the exam - the text response, context and language analysis - explaining how to prepare in terms of content, but perhaps more importantly to many, also exactly how to write it. This is particularly important because as I'm sure many of you will begin to realise next year, funnily enough, many English teachers at school don't actually teach you how to write! I'll be teaching my formulaic style of writing which I know many prefer - especially those maths/science students like myself - as it basically simplifies and solidifies both the structure and expression elements of essay writing. By providing a deep insight into what I've identified largely as the three key elements of VCE English - structure, content and expression - you will find a much more structured approach towards writing and studying in VCE English.

I can virtually cover any text as I teach quite a generalised system which can be adapted to any text. Regardless, I am familiar with most of the popular texts and have been providing examples for my students throughout my explanations. For context, I can teach any of the four as I have taught them all at some point.

The previous set of notes which I used throughout 2011 have sparked much acclaim and praise from my previous students. Despite this, after deciding to improve upon them, I'll now be supplying an extensive set of notes spanning over 50 pages and approximately 20 000 words for the session (pictures attached), which summarises basically everything that will be covered on the day, along with pieces of work written by myself which scored 10/10 as marked by VCAA examiners, as well as comprehensive lists of vocabulary and phrases that I used myself which you can simply integrate into your own writing. These notes will also allow you to easily revise any of the content later in the year by yourself, whilst also avoiding the need to take your own notes for the 3 hours. Also supplied will be several worksheets and language analysis articles to allow you to practise with yourself throughout the year.

Any additional time remaining in the sessions can be used for you to attempt to apply the methods that you will learn and immediately get feedback, or even just discuss any of my other subjects (Biology, Business Management, Methods, Spesh, Chemistry with their respective study scores in my forum signature) and how to prepare for them, or for you to ask questions regarding the UMAT and Medicine course itself. Advice on organising study plans and strategies has also been a popular option.

Pricing and Location
For these sessions, I will be charging $150 for each 3 hour session. While seemingly quite pricey, keep in mind that I am practically teaching everything I know within the one session, as opposed to some other tutors which 'reserve' their knowledge until later in the year to force you to keep coming back.

Read my endorsements below from students who have attended my sessions to get an idea of how others have found my program. Remember to take such things into account when choosing a tutoring program and not just blindly looking at study scores. Having conducted almost 100 of these sessions already without any dissatisfied customers over the last few years, I am confident in my abilities to provide a quality and cost-effective tuition experience.

The sessions can be held at the State Library, Box Hill Library, Glen Waverley Library or my residence in Doncaster East. Glen Waverley and Box Hill are recommended due to the availability of private study rooms. There is also the option for me to drive to your place (preferably south-eastern suburbs), but additional charges may apply for travelling time and petrol costs if the distance is quite far (beyond 30 minutes drive). So if you're interested either PM me on this site or e-mail me on a.ma_@hotmail.com with your details to be placed on the waiting list (see news/updates above for instructions). Alternatively, call me on 0433 599 303 and I'll discuss with you when would work best. Contact me for further details regarding this. Lastly, I carry a current Police Check and Working With Children Check for my university course, so both of these can be sighted upon request.

Guarantee
Lastly, since I know that many students and parents are skeptical of student tutors, once again as a guarantee I'll offer a 1 hour 'grace' period where if you're not satisfied with what you're receiving within the first hour, you can just walk out and not pay a cent. However, after having conducted almost 100 sessions already, no students have used this yet so hopefully you'll be equally as satisfied as they have been. Hope to hear from you!

I've had some questions about the notes that will be supplied so basically they are quite extensive, spanning 50 pages and 17 000 words and will cover everything which will be said on the day, plus more. These notes are very important as they allow you to revisit and revise all the content which will be covered in the session at a later date, as it is obviously impossible for you to remember everything come exam time just in a three and a half hour session held in the Summer. I've attached some pictures of the book and as you can see, they from now on will be fully bound as well. Due to the time and costs of getting them professionally bound, I am actually thinking of raising the price for sessions held later next year after the Summer (if any), so let me know if you're interested as soon as possible to secure yourself a Summer place and save yourself some money!

Countless hours. Started off in 2008 when I wrote the initial copy of the book over one week, spending about 4-5 hours each night after uni to get it ready in time for the mid-semester break. I've made several minor revisions since then until over the last two weeks over which I did a complete re-read and edited the entire thing, tidied up the presentation and so on.

I did a lesson with shinny and it was fantastic. It gave me exactly what i wanted which was a structured approach towards vce english. He also put an emphasis in areas which i wanted to know more or was unsure about that he had covered.  Overall great experience, hes a very friendly person and you will come out of his lesson knowing that you have learnt atleast one thing that will improve the way you write or even in a sense how you perceive writing.

Hello fellow VNers, I just wanted to raise awareness about this brilliant young tutor(he seemed like 18 to me). Anyways, our session started with language analysis, where he clearly and crisply explained his formulaic way of writing language analysis. Rather than reading straight off his 'legendary' notes (I emphasise this because it's literally a compact bomb of useful information and tips that you will NEED to do exceptionally well in English), he actually engaged in a conversation with me, talking to me about English and how to view it as a subject, a whole. The grace period ended and he nicely asked if I wanted to continue. I agreed and by the end of the session, I was thinking to myself, 'this was the best 100 I ever spent on an english tutor'.

After the sesh with Shinny, my confidence in english boosted from 2, to like 9. I'm well aware of how to approach my year 12 exam now and it's all thanks to this lad. :D

Shinny's program was really great, the notes are really helpful as well.

Sucks that he didn't do the same context as me :( but he still gave me a plethora of helpful tips and ideas! :D

Just had a session with andrew and I have to say, the $100 is definitely worth it.
His explanations about how to approach each section of the subject is easy to understand and his advice on what to do and what to look out for is very handy.
His book, which comes with the session, is VERY well done. His reader-friendly examples on how to structure paragraphs is very useful. Especially to a more maths-orientated person like me.

Hey T Towel :) xD

I also went through Shinny's Summer prep today :) I must say, i would be happy paying $150 for this.

He is well prepared and has concise notes and examples on all sections of the VCE Course. His notes come with exercises that you can do later in your spare time as well. They are also colour coded to help you clearly understand the examples he has prepared.

The overall depth achieved in the 3 and a bit hours is also amazing. If you need a kickstart into VCE English, Shinny should really be considered.

Also, his communication skills are excellent and I'm sure he will make a good doctor :)

BEST 3 HOURS OF ENGLISH OF MY LIFE!
COMMUNICATION+NOTES+KNOWLEDGE+PRICE= BRILLIANT (actually brilliant is an understatement) :)

he had given valuable information i wasn't even aware of and i was happy to say that he is probably the first person to ever help me with expression (which most teachers lack the ability or give the attention to touch on).
BASICALLY HE IS THE BEST OF THE BEST.

thank you shinny for today :)
