I dont think scaling should be abolished. It just seriously needs to be toned down. A 30 RAW in specialist = top 50% of students doing it, and it scales up to 38. For me to get a 38 scaled in PE I have to get at least 39.5 RAW, a top 8-9% finish.
Maximum scaling needs to be 5 for spesh. Humanities shouldnt get marked down and people who do them in VCE and get a similar ENTER to someone who did the asian 5 should get preference when it comes to humanities studies at unis. Food tech and co need to be marked down however.
I shouldnt be disadvantaged for not choosing the asian 5 especially when they are completely irrelevant to what I want to do after VCE.
Maybe there needs to be more emphasis on prerequisites and experience rather than just what you got as your ENTER when it comes to university selection processes.
Scaling is based on statistics. VTAC didn't just one day say 'ah, Spesh needs to be scaled from 30 to 40' it is based on the other raw scores of the students within that study. Specialist is scaled so highly because of the strength of the cohort, also for mathematics there is the requirement that no one is disadvantaged through choosing a more difficult stream of mathematics, ie for an equivalent raw SS the scaled scores will be FM<MM<SM. The scaling of Specialist has reduced greatly in the last few years (2007 50 ->54, 2009 50->52 :'( ), this is due to a greater number of lower performing people taking Specialist, lowering the average SS in the Specialist cohort's other studies(which indicates that competition has lowered). These people most likely chose Specialist due to the scaling, in doing this they reduce the scaling.

Thankyou for saying what I couldn't be bothered saying. If I could karma you, I would.

Also, no offence but aptitutde tests are a horrible idea. We shouldn't be judged of what we have the potential to do, but what he have done. If somebody with ahigh IQ bludges through high school, why should they get into law and not a student who worked their butt off and has a strong work ethic and capability to perform well when they put their mind to it?

Seamlessly said! :) I hope that Spesh would increase its scaling again some time in the near future..

Year 11:
Accounting      Maths Methods     Physics     Further Maths(3/4)     IT Apps(3/4)

Year 12:
English Language(3/40     Spec Maths(3/4)     Accounting(3/4)     Psychology(3/4)

Any thoughts appreciated
Not sure what the Year 11+ thing is (i'll assume it's 2 plans for yr 11) but you can't do the above combination because Spec can't be taken without Methods

I have 3 years for VCE, so those plans are my whole VCE course. So year 11 is my first year of VCE, 11+ second & 12 my last.

Are you able to do Spec Maths the year after doing Maths Methods?

Just went and looked at the VCAA exams for the subjects I was interested in, ruled out Legal Studies, Business Management, German and Economics. Legal Studies and Business Management seem to be subjects where you rote learn the whole time, very boring. I was iffy about German but now I'm sure I'm not going to do it. Economics seems to have nothing much to do with maths, mostly alot of theory.

So my revised plan looks like this, (all are 1/2 unless stated otherwise):

Year 11:
Accounting      Maths Methods     Physics     Further Maths(3/4)     IT Apps(3/4)

Year 11+:
Spec Maths     English Language     Psychology     Maths Methods(3/4)     Physics(3/4)

Year 12:
English Language(3/40     Spec Maths(3/4)     Accounting(3/4)     Psychology(3/4)

Any thoughts appreciated

Seeing as you've still got 2 VCE-free years ahead of you, I advise you not to "rule out" subjects that hastily (i.e. just by looking at past papers). You're thoughts on it may change as you near Year 11.

Just a reminder (you may know this already), seeing as you are taking 3 Maths subjects, only 2 can count towards your Primary 4. That is, one maths subject would definitely be in your bottom 2. But otherwise, you're revised choices are looking great! :)

Another thing to consider is doing a second English subject, this is because one has to be in your primary four.

Ah right, smart move. Does that mean you are doing year 11 in year 10 or adding an extra year after year 12?

Yeah you can do Spec maths the year after or the year during maths methods (unless you are a freak like Thor Taylor who did it the year before lol)

I think it just means adding a year between Year 11 and Year 12. Like he does Year 10, then Year 11, then Year 11 again, and then Year 12 and graduate.

So he does a year on yr 12? He graduates when he's 19 years old? Assuming he's 17 going on 18 in yr 12...
