Unfortunately my first 3 preferences all require 90+ ATAR's, and one of them in the high 90s, so it is important to an extent.

But I don't need that extra push for 99.90.

I'm sure if I had worked hard all year I would definitely be capable of it, but there is really no need, plus I've managed to achieve some other things through the year which will mean more for me :)

Otherwise it is to allow my mum to give a big fuck you to all my family friends who will undoubtedly give a call just to "catch up" on the day of results.

my mums "friend" did this on the exact day of mid year results and hasnt called since
needless to say, i had to somewhat lie about my result....

I think for most people its just the number they have to scrape to get into their course.

I haven't built up some big arbitrary number or goal, i just want what will get me into my course, anything after that and im happy...

I can't understand personally why people build it up to be anything other than this

Sigh this is a question I have been struggling with, and asking myself this question made me lose motivation to do VCE for half of term 3. I still think...it doesn't really mean anything. My recent spurt of motivations is just to own exams as hard as I can.

To me, my ATAR score is just a...shortcut, you could say, to help me get into my dream course; medicine. As long as I'd be able to get in to med, even if I get an atar of 0.05 or 99.95, I'd still be happy.

I still feel I want to do really well both this year and next year though, as not only would it help me get into my course, but also as a sort of.. challenge, a hurdle; if I can overcome this wall with no regrets knowing that I have tried my utter best, then I will be happy and feel that I have succeeded.

atar means jack shit to me since getting into my dream course is over, so thanks to one number, i now get to add another 2 years minimum to get where I want to be...

ever since i got my umat mark back, i just stopped giving a shit...there was no point stressing or trying too much anymore, because it wasn't going to make any difference...

"I'm pressured because of my azn parents"

-I hate this answer because it shows that you are weak enough to conform to this pressure and are not able to challenge their thinking. This should be the generation changes the asian mentality.

PS. I'm an asian

couldnt agree more

in china, there are less opportunities for the masses to become successful, thus parents push their kids

this is australia, losers with 5 IQ can become millionaire tradies... so i dont see why asian parents still have this mentality that "im going to push my kid to do the asian 5 and have no life whatsoever." Sure parents want the ebst for us, but the best in a broad concept. It encompasses everything, not just the age old belief that "he is achieving a 99% average in school and therefore he is happy." It doesnt work like that.

Bad luck on UMAT stonecold, I feel for ya. Just try your best and enjoy uni - biomed/science aren't bad courses in themselves either! You will eventually get to med anyways. :) Anyone can do ANYTHING if they put their mind to it. Impossible is nothing.

Never give up.

The worst thing for us now is to finish VCE with regrets.

I couldnt agree with you more mate. Guys, try and remember all the hard work that you have put in throughout the year and appreciate the fact that you've tried to be the best that you can be. Theres nothing more you can do but hope that everything falls into place when the time comes :)

Yep; life is just life. Some times you'll fail, other times you'll succeed. Just how far you go in life depends on how you PERSEVERE. Fall down 19 times, get back up 20.
