(tl;dr at the end lol)

Is there anyone out there who's done/doing both Literature and Global Politics? I have an interest in both, but I can only choose one.
I'm thinking of doing the following:
-Methods
-Economics
-Media
-Mainstream English
-Psychology 3/4
-Literature or Global Politics

EDIT: I'm in Year 10

Here are some pros and cons that I have for these two subjects. Please contest/add to these as much as possible!

PROS FOR LIT:
  • I love reading and writing, although I don't do it as much as I should
  • I've always been good at English, but I think I can do even better
  • I heard that doing Literature REALLY helps Mainstream English -- I'd love to get in the mid-high 40s for my English study score
  • I have an analytical mind, although my forte has always been creative writing
  • It sounds fairly interesting -- I'd like to have a different perspective when I read books/poems
  • It will improve my creative writing (I'm passionate about writing)
  • I liked Romeo and Juliet, but had to watch the 1968 movie at the same time to thoroughly enjoy it

CONS FOR LIT:
  • I'm not exactly the queen of...uh...bullshit
  • I'm afraid that I'll find it boring
  • It seems a bit tedious and dry
  • I'm not sure what the teachers are like for this subject

PROS FOR GLOBAL POLITICS
  • This interests me more than Literature tbh, it seems more useful for real life
  • I really like Economics, and I'd love to see how it ties in with politics
  • I have an interest in human rights, democracy, education, poverty, etc.
  • It would be amazing to actively know and understand current events -- I think I would become a more interesting and worldly person in general
  • I know that the teachers are amazing

CONS FOR GLOBAL POLITICS
  • It's very hard to do well in Global Politics
  • I'm not thaaaaaat interested in Australian politics (I'm doing Legal this year, but I was a bit bored with all the parliament/law making details)
  • I have to be committed to the news and newspapers and be ready for sudden changes

P.S. I'm dropping French for one of these two subjects

       tl;dr
  • Literature will help me get to the top for Mainstream English and help improve my creative writing (which is something that I love).
BUT I'm afraid it might be tedious, dry and boring.
  • Global Politics seems very interesting and more useful for real life than Lit -- I'd love to be able to understand and keep up with current events.
BUT I want a good study score from Global Politics, but smart people have said that they get around the early 30s (which isn't bad, but I'm aiming for something more since I have to justify dropping French hahahaha)

So what would you guys suggest? Or just describe what you love about Lit/Global Politics. Thanks in advance! Also, I'm new to this, so I don't know the forum etiquette or whatever. Uh, would it be annoying to post this in the Global Politics forum (if there is one)?

I can't speak for glopol but I have done Lit, so this is obviously a biased view :)
Nonetheless, I can confirm Lit does help with some aspects of English, and I personally found the course really enjoyable.

Ultimately it will come down to what you want to do after school, and tbh your subject selection won't matter a great deal. You've got Methods and English which is about all you need for prerequisites (bar Chemistry for Med.) If you're considering Arts then you could take a Politics subject at Uni that will cover everything you've learned from Units 1-4. You'll also be able to specialise in certain areas (eg. Contemporary Political Theory or Global Environmental Politics are some offered at Melb.)

Of course your interest levels will determine your performance far more so than subject selection, and VCE English is easy enough to grasp conceptually w/o Lit.
edit: Just realised you're in Year 10; the English study design is set to change (as are a couple of other subjects) which basically means the format of some of the essays will change. There's a compulsory creative piece, amongst other things. It's probably marginally closer to Lit. so those skills might be of some use. Alternatively you might find the overlap tedious and repetitive.

A brief defense of Lit: Yeah there's not a lot of jobs out there... (pay no attention to the English major sobbing in her little corner) but that doesn't mean the subject is without merit. Lit teaches you to think in a way that not even English can; you're examining the language so closely it can give you headaches, you're tying in historical contexts and considering alternate views. I know it gets a bad rep for the "bullshit" but I found that's not really the case. The assessors are kinda cynical about students using flowery language to obscure poor ideas and development. To do well requires a mix of both creativity and analytical ability, and in the end you'll be rewarded with a thinking style few other subjects can offer.

Then again, glopol might offer the same advantage just with a more political angle. Idk, hopefully someone here will have done both and can comment.

One last thing:
PROS FOR GLOBAL POLITICS
  • I know that the teachers are amazing
This will make a massive difference. It basically defined how I picked my Year 12 subjects since I was struggling too. For some people I know it doesn't make a difference; with a good textbook/study group/forum you can pretty much teach yourself if you're so inclined. But I found the teachers I had made a difference to both enjoyment and performance in a subject, so perhaps you could organise to talk with some department heads about their subjects (if your school encourages it?) Otherwise seek out some current year 11s and 12s if you know anyone and gauge their opinions.

You could always pick one of these up in Year 12 without Units 1/2 if Eco or Media don't turn out to be what you hoped for.

Best of luck!

There is a global board, and it's usually filled with a very motivated group of students who will be of great assistance when you reach yr 12.

I did both literature and global politics in year 12, and if I was forced to pick one over the other, I'd honestly go for Global. I scored better in lit than I did in global, but global was infinitely more interesting, and in fact inspired me to pursue its content in tertiary education. I'll also add that if (if) you know what you're doing, it's very easy to do well in. I had one person in my cohort last year score a 48, and we were a bunch of STEM-inclined students with a passing interest in political matters - i.e. a small and somewhat weak cohort, still got a handful of raw SSs over 40. You seem like (and this is just going off of one post haha) you have a strong grasp of the english language for a 15-16yo, and that will be definitely be a huge asset in lit, but if you feel like you've got a strong class environment and your only concern is that it's "hard" to do well in, let me clear: do global!

Oh, also, 3/4 global has next-to-nothing to do with aus politics, unless you do it as a case-study for unit 3.

written via mobile, pls no judgment for my poor phrasing   :D

Thank you both for your replies! I'm leaning slightly to Global Politics, but this could change. I wish I could choose more subjects (except without the extra effort HAHA)!
