TT's Methods, Specialist Summer Program 2010-2011
« on: September 17, 2010, 12:01:06 AM »
Hey guys, I didn't plan to release details for my summer program this early however due to an overwhelming interest I have finalised the details for this year's summer program, hopefully all of your questions will be answered in the following.

Firstly, what is the summer program? Well basically the main purpose of this program is to finish off the Methods 3/4, Specialist 3/4 course over the holidays. There is a big advantage in doing this; not only will you be able to get a solid understanding of all the material before the year even starts but it allows you to start doing practice exams over the entire year. I personally finished off the entire Methods and Specialist 3/4 course over the summer holidays during my VCE days and it was an immense help for year 12. It gave me confidence, it allowed me to relearn and listen to other techniques of teaching the same material during classes at school and most importantly, it allowed me to get through a huge heap of exams dating all the way back to 1999's-2000's over the course of the year.

Now the program is aimed at all Methods 3/4 and Specialist 3/4 students; whether you are a genius or a not-so-bright student (albeit the length of the program would vary). The program is quite flexible. For those who are just studying Methods 3/4 next year, then you will just be finishing off the Methods 3/4 course with me - there is nothing related with Specialist. For those studying Methods 3/4 and Specialist next year you can choose between two options: 1. Finish off Methods 3/4 course first with me then finishing off the Specialist course. or 2. If you think you do not require any help for Methods 3/4 then we will just focus on finishing off the Specialist course.

Length of program: I have yet to write the specific syllabus for the program (Methods 3/4 and Specialist) but will do in the nearby future; as there is still quite a bit of time before the summer holidays.

However here's the general consensus:

1. Those who wish to do both Methods 3/4 and Specialist - this is quite a tough program, to be frank, you need to be a dedicated student (note: you do not have to be a genius, but you definitely need to be hardworking). We will be aiming to finish Methods 3/4 in December (~5-6 weeks) and Specialist in January (~6 weeks). Lessons would most likely be 2 hours, once per week, unless you are willing to do two 1 hour lessons per week (what would be covered in the lessons, locations etc will be mentioned later on in this post).

2. Those who wish to do just Methods 3/4 - this program is quite 'comfortable'. Personally, I am aiming to finish the Methods 3/4 course using the whole of December and 2-3 weeks into January. Now how fast we finish the Methods course is highly dependent on how keen you are. If you wish to take it slowly, then 1 hour lessons per week will enable us to finish the entire course during the specified time length mentioned earlier. However if you wish to finish in 5-6 weeks, then 2 hour lessons per week (or two 1 hour lessons per week) will enable us to finish just using the whole of December; however you would need to be quite dedicated.

[Finishing the Methods course any earlier would require you to do at least 10-11 hours of study a day + a lot of dedication and this would enable you to finish the course in 1-1.5 weeks like I did, but if you want a life in the holidays I suggest you don't do this :) lol]

3. Those who wish to do just Specialist - again this program is quite comfortable and the time required to finish this program is very similar to 2.

[Again if you don't want a life in the holidays then you should be able to finish the Specialist course in 2-2.5 weeks with 10-11 hours of study per day ^_^]

Time and Location: I plan to start the program on December 1st, however if you finish school later than this then we can begin on another later date. Those who want to do program 1. (Methods 3/4 and Specialist) will most definitely have to start in early December. However those who just want to do Methods 3/4 or Specialist then starting mid-late December is fine. Location would be at the state library however if you live in the Western suburbs then my house would be the preferred location. I currently live right next to Oak Park train station so it is very convenient to get here. If the state library or my house is inconvenient for you then we could try to find another meeting place however I can not guarantee anything.

Rates: I still charge $25/hour for one-on-one or $20/hour/per person for groups of two or more. However I encourage those who are interested in picking program 1. (Methods 3/4 and Specialist) to do one-on-one.

What will be covered in the lessons: The syllabus (which will come out soon) will contain what we will cover in each lesson. However lessons will be mainly theory based. We will go through the theory in detail and questions will be set for homework. I will be setting questions out of Essentials 3/4 book for both Methods and Specialist. If your school does not use this book or if you have yet to obtain a copy of the book then I will send you the ebook. Now if Essentials is not your school's prescribed book, I still highly recommend you doing the questions out of Essentials. To be honest, the questions in Essentials are the best, I've tried Maths Quest, Heinemann but Essentials' questions are just on another level. Also I will provide you with practise SACs and other worksheets if you are hungry for more questions.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

From past experience, good time slots and availability fills up quite fast... contact me early and we will set a time etc.

Only a few more places are available for these summer programs, there has already been quite alot of signups, so if you are still interested let me know and we will arrange for a specific time because enrollment will close soon!

The preferred time is Sat or Sun at the state lib, or if you live close to my house (Oak Park) then we can set any other time.

I definitely endorse this guy.

He is my current tutor on a week to week basis and i have been going to him for about 8 weeks so i think i've had long enough to see his quality.

Before i was in a group tutoring situation with about 7 people in a class and i can not stress enough how crappy that was. He(previous tutor) was maybe spending 20 minutes out of the 2 hours i paid for with me. In a situation where its one on one or a small group like TrueTears is offering you get so much more out of it, because, basically he *IS* actually spending two hours with you out of two hours.

The sheer volume he can cover in a short time is staggering and i can definitely vouch for this too. He managed to cover almost all the theory i needed for calculus in about 4 hours (mind you this was the weekend before my SAC and i hadn't had a tutor for awhile so it was a rather good effort). You should have no doubt that this guy can actually teach you the methods course in an amazingly short time.

Also, he's doing mathematics at uni which is also a big help and did VCE just last year so he is still pretty fresh with all the VCE terminology and exam conditions and such.

You won't find anyone else on this website that has more passion for maths than TT.
This guy is pro, in fact pro is in understatement.
I'm only in year 10, but I hope he still offers tutoring in year 12 ^_^.

I'm interested. I'll be away on a Summer Science Forum/ Camp for the first two weeks of January.
I was hoping to get methods/spesh done, but seeing as that would be out of the question, I am easily better at methods than spesh.

So, I was thinking we do the Spesh course, and work around the weeks I'm away?

I'm a decent Specialist student, but I want to get 'up there'... preferably the top ;)

I'm interested, but I'm going to be away for two weeks mid-January at the National Maths Summer School/Camp-thing...is it possible to fit in your summer spesh program after this/around it?
I did (do I get to say DID since there's only one exam left?) methods 3/4 this year, so I'd only be looking at doing a spesh course. In GMA, I'm getting high 90% averages, so I reckon I'd be able to cope with the course compressed somewhat more than your summer course normally is.
I won the GAT: 49/50/50.
